Welcome

Dear players, supporters, friends, and family;

On behalf of the Vancouver Gay Volleyball Association (VGVA), I welcome you to our annual Homovember Tournament 2023. We are happy to announce that 30 teams are competing in a single venue: Harry Jerome Sports Center at 7564 Barnet Hwy, Burnaby, BC, on November 4 & 5. The tournament format, schedule, and information are found in this tournament guide. Please let us know if you have any other questions, and we look forward to seeing you on the courts!

Saturday, November 4

All players will be emailed pool play results.

Sunday, November 5

No captains meeting, check with registration with any questions.

5:00 pmAwards ceremony immediately following the last match in each division

The facility does not have a concession, however we will be providing lunch on both days. Please bring water bottles for a better tomorrow! We will be providing pizza on day one and Subway sandwiches on day two, a variety of flavours will be kept in line with a compliment to most dietary restrictions.

There is no food or drink allowed on the courts or wooden arena ring to keep the cyclists safety in mind. Please eat on the outer court area, picnic tables, or outside if it’s a nice day. If a team is found with anything other than water on the courts, they will be penalised points. One warning, followed by immediate docking of 5 points on their next match. If a third offence is witnessed, then a 10 point penalty off their next match. If a reffing team is witnessed with food, we will assess penalties from your next match.

Arrival & Registration

Upon arrival, all players should check in at the main desk and sign their team waivers prior to stepping on the court

Team captains should verify that all of their players have signed the VGVA waiver before playing

The tournament organisers may issue penalties to teams with players who fail to sign waivers before playing

Identification

Players must be 18 years or older, and must check-in and register with government-issued photo identification.

Teams must have a minimum of six players to play. No exceptions.

Scoring, Matches & Reseeding

Day 1 Pool Play AM (all teams) – Saturday, Nov 4, 8:00 am–1:00 pm

Pool Play consists of 4, 1 timed sets (a set being a 25 minute match with a 5 minute warm up for a total of 30 minutes). All matches will be played starting at 4 to 25, win by 2, HARD cap at 27. If a tie exists after time is called, play one point to determine match winner, games may not end in a tie for point purposes.

Pool play is timed per the schedule below. We will adhere strictly to this schedule. Each team is allowed two 30 second timeouts per match. No timeouts allowed after the 2 minute warning.

Day 1 lunch break & reseed

After the Day 1 Pool Play AM, points will be calculated and teams will be seeded from first (1st) to fifth (5th) in each pool. The highest seeded teams (i.e., 1st) will move up and the lowest seeded teams (i.e., 5th) will move down. A team’s new ranking will be posted by the registration desk located near the HJSC main office.

Day 1 Pool Play PM (all teams) – Saturday, Nov 4, 1:30–6:30pm

Pool Play consists of 4, 1 timed sets (a set being a 25 minute match with a 5 minute warm up for a total of 30 minutes). All matches will be played starting at 4 to 25, win by 2, HARD cap at 27. If a tie exists after time is called, play one point to determine match winner, games may not end in a tie for point purposes.

Day 2 Pool Play AM (all teams) – Sunday, Nov 5, 8:00 am–1:00 pm

Pool Play consists of 4, 1 timed sets (a set being a 25 minute match with a 5 minute warm up for a total of 30 minutes). All matches will be played starting at 4 to 25, win by 2, HARD cap at 27. If a tie exists after time is called, play one point to determine match winner, games may not end in a tie for point purposes.

Day 2 lunch break & reseed

After the Day 2 Pool Play AM, points will be calculated and teams will be reseeded to 1st to 5th in each pool for the last time. We will allow for a 30 minute lunch break at this time prior to beginning the single elimination best of three bracket play. A teams new seeding and final placement for playoffs will be posted by the registration desk located near the HJSC main office.

Day 2 Bracket Play (all teams) – Sunday, Nov 5, 1:30–6:00 pm

Bracket matches will be played best of 3 matches starting at 4 to 25, win by 2 points, hard cap at 27. If a third match is required, play will start at 0 to 15. Switch at 8, cap at 17. This is a single elimination tournament, once a team loses, they will ref the following match on that court. Each team is allowed two 30 second timeouts per match.

Prizes will be awarded at the end of each division for the winner of 1st in each pool.

Awards

Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each division. Within each division there will also be an award to 1 MVP and 2 All Stars of each division. These awards will be given to members of the two teams playing in the final. 1 All Star from each team will be awarded with 1 overall MVP over the two teams. This will be awarded by the team that referees that match.
